Most backyard patios we pour start the same way - bare dirt, gravel base, and a plan. The prep work is where the whole job gets decided. Get the forms wrong and you're dealing with headaches later. Get them right, and the pour practically takes care of itself.

Here's what we were working with: a full wood form setup with proper bracing all the way around, a compacted gravel base underneath, and a curb detail built into the perimeter. That curb isn't just visual. It adds structural definition to the edge and keeps the slab from looking like it just got dropped into the yard.

The finished slab speaks for itself. Clean control joints, smooth surface from edge to edge, and a built-in step that ties the whole thing together. This is what a monolithic pad looks like when the prep is done right - one continuous pour, no separate footings, solid from the ground up.

What a lot of homeowners don't realize is how much the setup phase matters. The forms have to be level, staked, and braced before a single truck shows up. We take that part seriously because it's what separates a patio that holds up for decades from one that starts showing problems in a few years.

This backyard went from a bare patch of ground to a usable outdoor space that's built to handle real use. No shortcuts, no patching over problems - just solid concrete work from start to finish.
